The artistic legacy of Vito Acconci
BIOGRAPHY, MAIN EXHIBITIONS, MUSEUMS AND QUOTES OF VITO ACCONCI'S WORKS
Biography of Vito Acconci
VITO ACCONCI (1940 - 2017, Bronx, New York) was an American artist, performer, and architect. Best known for his provocative and often radical practices. Acconci has been a vital presence in contemporary art since the late 1960s; his confrontational and ultimately political works have evolved from writing through conceptual art, performance, film, video, multimedia installation, Body Art, and Land Art (along with his friend Dennis Oppenheim and Christo). He was part of a creative generation that was close to the Minimalists.
He initially began writing, enrolling in the University of Iowa MFA Writing Program in the early 1960s. In 1967, he co-founded the independent magazine 0 to 9, through which his work transitioned into intermedia, while the magazine became a model for future collaborative magazines. Then, in 1968, he embarked on an eight-year period in which he expanded writing into street work, and interventions were conveyed through handwritten text, photography, sound, film, and video. Some of his best-known works from this period, such as Following Piece (1969), Trademarks (1970), and Seedbed (1972), were touchstones of this era and had an outsized influence on his peers and subsequent generations of artists. Acconci's work continued to transform throughout the mid-1970s, positioning him as an unconventional architect who would continue to design structures from a wide range of materials. He founded Acconci Studio in 1988. His public works - many of which were never built - are provocative and memorable, while his architectural work simultaneously combines design, architecture and environmental use. One of his most famous works is Mur Island, for Graz, Austria (2003), a floating platform in the middle of the Mur River, commissioned on the occasion of Austria's nomination as European Capital of Culture. Vito Acconci was named Design of the Year by Design Miami in 2012.
